Hello readers , today´s class was about features of spoken discourse. The teacher showed to us a power presentation where spoken discourse and its classification was presented.
We can say that some features of spoken language are :
- Conjoined short phrases and clauses.
- May be planned( lecture) unnplanned ( conversation).
- Employ fixed phrases , fillers , hasitation , markers.
- Shows variation , speaker roles , purpose , context.
Moreover, there is a three way of seeing spoken discourse :
The first one is as INTERACTION : It has to do with social interaction and conversations . some of the skills involved in this type are opening and closing , choosing topics , making small-talk , joking , reacting to others , turn talking.
The second is TRANSACTION: This happens where the main focus of the transaction is how accurately the speakers use the language.
some of the skills involved in transaction are explaining a neeed or intention , describing something , asking questions , asking for clarification , confirming information , justifying an opinion , making , suggestions, making comparisons.
And the last one , PERFORMANCE: this kind of talk has to do with public speaking , transmiting information before an audience suach as classroom presentations , public announcements, and speeches.
Talk as performance to written language since we are aware of creating an impact on the listeners, so we tend to manipulate the message in order to convince people.
some examples of talking as performance are:
- Giving a class report about a school trip.
- Conducting a class debate .
- Giving a speech of welcome.
- Making a sales presentation
- Giving a lecture.
The main features of talk as performance are a focus on both message and audience , pedictable organization and sequencing , importance of both form and accuracy , often monologic.
Furthermore , to connect pur ideas when talking we need some markers to sound logic, and not sounding like a robot.
Here is a video that can help you to get those markers to connect ideas .....enjoy it!
